  • 2007.08.30: Filling Time
Phew. August has been... Busy. Most of my free time this month has been spent taking care of two things: email problems and being in the dentist's chair. The email trouble began when my email was hijacked by spammers, so I had to overhaul everything. That took a while. Then I had to go to the dentist for a cracked tooth, then one week later a filling fell out (not kidding... Got one thing fixed and another thing went wrong), and then I was able to get some cavities taken care of.

See, we finally got real dental insurance, but figuring it out and getting the steps right to file claims took a bit of work. What they didn't tell us was that you had to, after filing everything twice (once with each insurance company and waiting for responses), chant "Ookapele" and then take a left at the singing bush. But hey, six months later one dental procedure gets paid for. Well, some of it anyway.

In fact, yesterday I spent 90 minutes at the dentist before going to work for nearly ten hours. Luckily Sam, despite being very tired after a screwy day, was a very good girl and let me just sit there with my migraine and mouth pain when I got home. The worst part was that everyone yesterday had really good-looking food to eat, and I was stuck without the ability to chew, and when I could eat it was thin soup. I can't wait to chew again without pain. Tomorrow, I'm having a burger or a nice turkey sandwich. At which point another filling will probably fall out, with my luck.

In the meantime, how about this picture of Sam, from early in the morning when we were trying to get to work:

Sam also recently went to the Zoo to visit Tai Shan, the Panda born a few short hours before she was born. Unfortunately, it was so sunny that most of the photos didn't come out well. When I have some time I will try and run them through an editor to make them more viewable. Until then, enjoy these few snaps of Sam from the past few weeks...

    Either this elephant is relaxing,
or it has to pee or pass gas.

Sam has taken over the Zoo! Patrons
fled the terror of the titanic toddler!

    Ready for Hockey Season!

    Favorite player? Me? Nah...

    Trying to snag Mommy's Heroclix!

What? Mess with me, mess with my bear.

2007.08.01: August 2007 Picks in Brief

  • Book: Nothing. Seriously, I do hope to get one finished this year...

  • CD: Prince, Purple Rain
What does it say about current music that I have to go to a "modern classic" for something to recommend? Probably his best album after 1999. Everything else is pretty much downhill from here.

  • DVD/Film: Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show
I grew up watching the Super Friends in all of the various incarnations, but this (and the final version, Super Powers: Galactic Guardians) is my favorite because it features Firestorm, one of my favorite comic book characters from my youth (they have since completely screwed the character up...). For this version of Super Friends, producers even brought in Adam West to voice Batman, and I was at the right age to appreciate how cool that was. The best part? Super Friends is age-appropriate for a certain wee lass with a love for Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

  • Magazine: The Week
Considering just how little time I have to pay attention to anything anymore, it's nice to have this magazine, which summarizes the best of the news from the world in a concise 40-page package. Sometimes, I actually get past page 10 before the next issue arrives!

  • TV: Burn Notice, USA Network
The network that gave us Monk and Psych now has the story of this CIA agent who was fired (given a "Burn Notice") and blacklisted, then dumped with nothing in Miami. Burned while on a job in Africa, the lead character is determined to find out who burned him and why. To make money, he becomes a private eye of sorts, helping people with problems they can't handle themselves. Co-stars include Sharon Gless and my favorite, Bruce Campbell, who along with Gabrielle Anwar provides the best comedy. My wife noted that for a show about a former agent/hitman, there is not a lot of graphic violence and seldom does anyone die (and never on screen). This show is on late at night, and is safer to show to younger viewers than stuff on networks at 8pm. Go figure.
