  • 2006.07.10: They Say It's Her BIRTHDAY!

    SAMMY'S ONE!
    too subtle?

Yep! My wee Angel is ONE! She survived all the terrible trials of her first year: all the fawning, the experimentation with solid food, the obnoxious photos and even sillier captions... She's made it through it all. And she can now rest easy that that life is going to settle down and Mommy and Daddy will leave her alone and stop trying to feed her weird stuff like prunes or take stupid pictures.

Heh. Yeah, right... We're just getting started. And so is she. Enjoy this retrospective of Sam's first year. I'll be back later this week with photos from... The First Cake! and a little ruminating on my little bundle of joy.

Thanks for being a part of it all...

And now, Samantha Katherine Deans, This is YOUR LIFE! (Uncle Goopy not included...)

    Sam's first photo.

What a profile... Is that my nose?

    Day one.
    Still asleep from the surgery.

    Day two.
Opens eyes, sees who's President, wants back in.

    Day three.
    We're going home!

    End of week one.
    Monkey claw attack perfected.

It's amazing her hands were that small.

Still new, still looked like Churchill.

I actually miss her nibbling my nose.

She still has that wide eyed wonder.

    Please... Let me sleep.

    Schumacher won? Dammit!

    What's she plotting?

    Unabashed joy...

    ...And unabashed wonder.

    Singing for breakfast.

Is she flipping me off in her sleep?

    VO-la-re!

    Oatmeal: No.

    Great random shot.

    Finger: Yes.

    Ready for takeoff!

    Prunes: No.

Ready in my ruffles AND pearls, Gramma!

    Coffee: YES!

We have no idea how she did this.

    Insert Tarzan yell here.

    Who's doing what to whom?

Hi there, welcome to the show...

...And where are you two from?

    Ah! Sweet caffiene!

    Zzzz...

    Another snout chewed...

    Biscuit: Resounding yes.

Shakes wants in on the action.

Sam annoints her new teething blanket.

    Frosty: Yes.

    One more great random photo.

    Recreating the day of birth...

    ...Confusing Sam in the process.

    Cool new toy!

    Pancakes: Yes.

    Own foot: Yes.

    Oatmeal (Second Try): No.

Sam tries out her Newsanchor look.

    Sam gets into Daddy's shows...

    Mushrooms: Maybe.

Waving "Hi!" to all her internet fans.

Taking in the nuances of hockey.

Why changing Sam can be difficult.

    Father & Daughter.

    Sweet girl.

    Love that smile...

    Plate: Better than prunes.

    Waiting the next food challenge.

    I'm gonna be... ONE!

And the Best from May through July 9...

    Peek-a-boo!

I guess she doesn't need a fishing pole...

One more in a line of great lucky shots.

    Look, Ma! No hands!

It's as if she's going "Vroom! Vroom!"

    Must! Eat! Toy!

    Plotting something...

    Like the hat?

    Mother, please. I'm sorting diapers.

While daddy naps... The Flasher emerges!

Sam tries on her new bathing suit...

...And makes sure it can get wet.

    What?

    Plotting her birthday shopping.

    Baby Yoga!

    Hi there!

    Hey there, sports fans!

    Hrm.

    Please... No pictures.

    Hey! What's with the lid?

    How about this hat?

No tush + No belt = Elmo says "Hi."

    Dora on her mind.

    Love that smile.

What the hell happened to my cow?

    Sammy is Freddie Mercury!

    Hello.

    What are YOU doing there?

Got my bag! Ready to shop!

    Sam and friend.

Not so sure about this hat.

    Contemplating her upcoming big day...

Checking out the restaurant with Gramma...

Tomorrow's my big day... I'm ONE!

2006.07.01: July 2006 Picks in Brief

  • Book: Moo! Baa! LaLaLa!, Sandra Boynton
Sam's cousin Bill (my nephew - not the one that plays hockey) gave this to her. It's got Shakes in it, and we all know how much Sam loves Shakes. We're partial to that cow ourselves.

  • CD: Fort Minor, The Rising Tied
(Held over from last month since we haven't bought any new music since then.) Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park has created a Rap album that proves Rap has truly evolved beyond racial and cultural stereotypes. For the past few years Eminem has been the sole representative of succesful non-Black rappers. Shinoda may break that barrier with Fort Minor, his Linkin Park side project. What will separate Shinoda from the rest, and in my opinion makes this a superior work, is his subject matter: parents who put their careers ahead of their families, why the Gulf War (mark II) is wrong, and the after-effects of the Japanese internment camps of World War II.

  • DVD/Film: The Fog of War
One more brilliant Errol Morris documentary where Morris basically sits back and lets his subject do all the talking. This time, it's Robert MacNamara (Secretary of Defense under Kennedy and Johnson) who is considered wholly responsible for Vietnam. MacNamara seems very intelligent and likable, but Morris lets him go, and every so often, you do want to throw something at the screen.

  • Magazine: Parenting Magazine
Okay. This pick may be obvious... But then again, so am I.

  • TV: United States Grand Prix, Speed Network
Last year, a tire issue caused 14 of 20 cars to pull out of the race on the formation lap before the race began (6 cars + 1 mile track = Boring race). This year, the race was very entertaining, buoyed by Speed Network's great coverage. The race itself was quite good, save the final outcome: a Ferrari 1-2 (I can't stand the Ferrari team). The highlight of the race weekend was a pair of broadcasts which included a two-hour program (thank you TiVo - without ads it was 70 minutes!) interviewing all the drivers, and another two-hour (70 minute) show on the technical aspects of the cars featuring the new regulations for this year.
